I was up and out early this first Saturday of December…the first snowy Saturday of the season. Appropriate for December in Chicago I suppose. The city was still quiet and quite beautiful. Heavy wet snow had been falling since the wee hours of the morning and now clung to bare branches and covered parked cars like icing on a cupcake. Although I have lived here my entire life, I still have the feeling that there is something magical about the first real snow.

I was in my car, warm and heading to my early appointment. As I drove along I observed how many bikes were left out to shiver in the cold overnight, now blanketed in white. I often wonder about bikes outside at night, especially in this weather. Is the owner’s place too small to bring it inside? Do they have a roommate who doesn’t understand the need to bring it inside?

Do they not feel about their bike the way I feel about mine?
