I finally got around to watching The Grand Budapest Hotel, originally released in 2014. Yeah, that’s about right. I’m always really (really!) behind on movie watching. I don’t seem to go to the theater much anymore, but I regret not seeing this on the big screen.
Aside from the witty dialog, this is a visually stunning movie. Every scene is a small vignette that could stand alone as a photograph or painting. The limited color palette uses saturation (or lack of) to help to weave the story of the lobby boy and the concierge. The costumes and sets are reminiscent of an illustrated storybook, adding to the story instead of distracting from it.
I must watch this again, if only for the art direction. And if possible, catch it as it’s meant to be seen – in the theater.
Thanks, Wes Anderson. You’ve provided much-needed inspiration for the upcoming week.
