I first spotted the tattered fabric flapping in the wind while sitting at a red light on Lincoln Avenue. When the light turned green, I could see the full sign as I moved forward.
There’s something about the way paint deteriorates when applied to brick. I love what happens to each letter and how it affects our comprehension of full words. I often stop to take pictures of signs and type as I move throughout the city – either on my bike or like today, in my car.
Although I kept driving, there was something about that sign that stuck with me. I got a few blocks away and made a U-turn. I pulled in the driveway alongside the building, got out and took a few shots of the sign.
There are some who may not see the beauty in what I saw that day. Oftentimes, these signs are painted over or torn down along with the building it’s attached to.
I’m glad I turned around.
